The Art of Foley
"...walk on by"
Foley is the art of organically recording, editing, and mixing sounds in exact synchronization with moving film images during the final post production process of movie making. In most well budgeted feature films, all action sounds (as well as machine and ambient sounds) are eventually recorded and/or edited in from “Hard FX” libraries after set/location shooting is completed. This process of re-recording and editing is done to maximize control over individual sound elements, thus enhancing dramatic effect, and to allow for foreign dialog to eventually be dubbed in, if desired. The “dubbed” dialog would then be mixed with the recorded foley sounds and hard FX to create a full sonic picture. The art of foley is named after one of it’s early practitioners, Jack Foley (1891-1967).
